Any citizen of Lošinj or a visitor is eligible for entry into the competition for a short story. Stories need to be up to 1800 characters long, including spaces, written in Croatian, English, German, Italian or Slovenian. Any story theme is allowed, however it is expected that the stories to refer to the island of Losinj, to memories of the island, its beauty, its fragrances and landscapes, through personal experience or upon reflection.
The main thrust of this literary contest is to actively engage island visitors and motivate local authors to have a go at creative writing. This is the only literary competition of this kind in Croatia.
After the competition deadline, all submitted stories will be published and three stories chosen by a jury will be awarded prizes.
Literary festival and evening story readings will be held at attractive Lošinj locations, assisted by musicians, actors and other performers. The aim is to launch a new cultural initiative for the island, to promote its cultural context and to add to its current cultural portfolio through an open, flexible literature festival, as a place where the island hosts and visitors will meet. Competition jury comprises eminent, established Croatian writers who will also contribute to the festival by reading their stories and giving talks to the festival audiences. The idea is to engage and encourage local literary talent into creative writing, irrespective of age.
