Veli Losinj Tower
The detached circular tower in the center of Veli Lošinj was built in the 15th century, in the first decades of Venetian rule over the eastern Adriatic coast. Deep walls, small openings and relatively low (17 m), for centuries resisted gunshot fire from enemy ships and shielded the population of Lošinj from pirate robbers. Formerly a dominant building in the city harbor, at the beginning of the 19th century, loses military power and gains symbolic significance, and appears on the coat of arms of the newly founded Velojlovsk municipality. After nearly two centuries of decay, it has been thoroughly restored and in 2001 it opened the Museum-gallery space of the Tower, part of the Lošinj Museum, which through its permanent post tells about the famous history of velor marinas and tourism.

Dolphin center, Veli Lošinj

Lošinj dolphins, dolphins of our archipelago are under the protection of the Blue World Institute, which opened the Lošinj Marine Education Center (LMEC) in Veli Lošinj in 2003 – the first center of this purpose on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. Since its opening, the Center has become a tourist attraction and the main education center for the sea in the region. Although it has an area of only 160 m2 that has been thoroughly reconstructed before opening, the building dates back to 1826, and there are many unsolved problems related to the age of the building. The lack of space has become a significant limiting factor given that the number of employees, volunteers and students, or activities that are being implemented over the years, is growing. LMEC is the central point for presenting the work of the Blue World Institute, and has become a tourist attraction and educational core in the region. At the center, there are permanent and occasional exhibitions as well as interactive multimedia presentations. Workshops and lectures are held regularly for visitors of diverse themes and directed to all ages. The Blue World Institute is continually striving to improve and update the program with the latest scientific knowledge and content.
