Sveti Ivan - panoramic view

Antonio Sforzina had the church built on the very top of Kalvarija Hill (234 m) in 1755 as a votive chapel for his family, and it was consecrated by the popular Osor Bishop Nikola Dinarić, later the Bishop of Split. The Way of the Cross (via crusis) was built on the path leading uphill from Veli Lošinj to the church within the same era, with three simple chapels and wooden crosses as stations. Near the church there are preserved remains of a simple stone hut – a hermit lodging where priest Petar Kokorin of Zagreb Bishopric lived from 1807 to 1834. His second pilgrimage to the Holy Land inspired him into the life of a hermit.
